The question of what I need support with is irrelevant. Everyone needs support whether they have a disability or not. I'm sorry if that sounds rude or disrespectful, but it's very tiring for me to cope with the fact that most people think that if it weren't for my disability, I'd be superhuman. Support comes in all different forms for different people. Whether it's a hug on a bad day or a joke on a sad day, everyone deserves to have their feelings validated. That's exactly what my mentor and one of my dearest friends did for me (and does!) on a daily basis.

The institution is one of the most accessible in our area, so it's not even that. Sorry to spout off, but in all honesty, not everything I need is because of my disability, and EVERYONE needs to understand that. I need things because I'm an imperfect human.

I'm really sorry, Erin. This sounds scary and it's shameful that there won't be someone available full-time. This seems like part of a very common phenomenon in accessibility: institutions are often only partly accessible, if they are at all. I'm not sure why this inadequacy is considered okay. I think your blog could become a great tool to raise awareness about how this hurts people.

I don't mind if people ask about my visual impairment, but when I had my guide dog, it got old answering the same old questions when I went out into the community. To be honest, my stress level is much lower now that my dog is gone and people don't ask the questions about the "cute dog" or kids come running up to me screaming "doggie!" I kid you not, there were parents I wanted to strangle because their children were not leaving me alone even when I told them I was busy.

Showering at night really does help things. I also use to put my clothes out (on top of my dresser or desk) the night before. It saves time on coordination (and thinking).

I'm very jealous of you for having a hand-written note from Schuyler!
